about

I wrote this song about the other one percent... the millions of Americans living in incarceration. Among the statistics is my little brother. For decades I’ve lived with the gut-wrenching grief, guilt, and feelings of helplessness that accompany the loss of a loved one to the inhumane grasp of an unjust system. Imprisonment doesn't just punish the inmate... when a brother is locked away the whole family does time, and we carry that weight with us to work, into our relationships, and into our homes. My brother has his issues, but ruthless isolation isn’t the solution. Prison kicks those who are already down, and robs us of humanity. I want nothing more than to see this broken system radically reformed, and to see all our brothers and sisters get a real chance at life. Today I accept that I cannot change my brother or alter his trajectory directly. I can, however, get help getting my own life together, get a grip, recover from my own trauma, and try to live by example. This song is a promise to my brother, my family, and myself to stay strong, and stay vigilant.

lyrics

I was miles away when I heard a scream from the asphalt
Bone snap glass pop metal bend
Raced to the scene when it was much too late
He was hammer down
Out of control
Never once thought to pump the brakes

Bend ahead runs over a cliff
Guardrail worn
Blacktop slick
I'll fire a flare each night
Say a little prayer you will see this light

I was fast asleep when the fuel caught up to the flame
Report said the whole place went up in a flash
He never really stood a chance
He had gunpowder in his veins
The alarm sounds just in time for me to see my brother burn alive

Bend ahead runs over a cliff
Guardrail worn
Blacktop slick
I'll fire a flare each night
Say a little prayer

So if I'm dreamin'
Driftin' over the white line
Tellin' myself lies
If I'm not alright don't pretend there's still time

Bend ahead runs over a cliff
Guardrail worn
Blacktop slick
I'll fire a flare each night
Say a little prayer you will see this

Bend ahead runs over a cliff
Guardrail worn
Blacktop slick
I'll fire a flare each night
Say a little prayer you will see this light
